Giving Your Food Height and Messing It Beautifully

028.7 Lesson 07 of 08 3 quiz questions 1 assignment

Height in food photography transforms a flat, two-dimensional arrangement into a composition with genuine three-dimensional presence. A burger, a tower of pancakes, a stack of waffles — these are compelling subjects precisely because height creates shadow, and shadow creates depth. The technical challenge is that food rarely achieves, and even more rarely sustains, the height that makes it most photogenic. Food stylists use a range of supports to build and maintain height: toothpicks and skewers inserted invisibly into the interior of stacked elements; T-pins driven through the back of ingredients to hold them at a specific angle; crumpled kitchen foil packed into the interior of a bowl to raise the apparent filling level.
