Texture in the surrounding environment of a food photograph serves two functions: it adds visual richness to areas of the frame that would otherwise be empty, and it creates a tonal and tactile contrast that makes the food's own texture appear sharper and more vivid. A rough linen napkin placed beneath a smooth porcelain bowl makes both the roughness of the linen and the smoothness of the bowl appear more pronounced — because the eye registers the contrast between them.
