The most important prop in food styling is the ingredient itself. Before any surface, vessel, or accessory is considered, the food must be selected with photographic intent: the brightest tomatoes, the most uniformly shaped prawns, the herbs with the least blemish. In a kitchen, imperfect ingredients are usable; in food photography, they are visible — and every imperfection becomes a focal point the viewer returns to.
