The surface beneath the food and the background behind it are the two largest visual fields in a food photograph. They are not neutral — they communicate the food's story. A weathered wooden board suggests rustic, handmade, farmhouse. A polished grey concrete surface suggests contemporary, urban, restaurant. A linen cloth suggests domestic warmth. The choice of surface is as much a storytelling decision as a visual one, and it should be made in relation to the character of the food, not just its colour.
