A person can be flattered by almost any soft light, but an object cannot be flattered — it can only be described — and the whole difficulty and the whole joy of product photography is that light does not merely fall on a thing, it reveals what the thing is made of, so that the same lamp that makes silk look like silk will make chrome look like a smear and glass look like a grey ghost unless you learn to shape it deliberately.
