The camera for food photography need not be expensive, but it must be controllable. The two essential controls are aperture (which shapes the zone of sharpness) and white balance (which determines the truthfulness of colour). A camera that allows manual override of both is sufficient for professional food photography — and that includes many mobile phones, when used with discipline.
