Primary Functions of Light and the Art of Shadow

026.7 Lesson 07 of 08 3 quiz questions 1 assignment

Light in food photography serves two primary functions: it provides information, and it creates mood. These two functions are often in tension. More information means more light — revealing every detail of the surface of the dish. More mood means less light — allowing parts of the scene to recede into shadow, creating atmosphere and directing the viewer's attention. The accomplished food photographer manages this tension consciously, never accidentally.
