The Zone System, developed by Ansel Adams for large-format landscape photography, translates directly to food photography with one crucial adaptation: the zones that matter most are the mid-tones. In food photography, the highlights (the specular gloss on a sauce, the sheen on a berry) and the shadows (the depths of a chocolate ganache, the interior of a folded crêpe) are contextual — they frame the mid-tone, which is where the colour of the food lives.
