The instruction to "be part of the style" is the Dean's most liberating compositional directive: when the table setting, props, and backgrounds fail to produce a compelling image, the photographer's own presence is available as a compositional element. A hand holding a bowl of soup, bringing it toward the viewer; hands holding a cup of coffee, the steam rising between the fingertips; a person seated at a window ledge with a plate of food, their face turned away in enjoyment — these are all food compositions in which the human presence tells the story that the food alone cannot.
