Many photographers assume that overhead (flat-lay) photography is the easiest food angle because it requires no styling on the sides — the food is simply arranged on a surface and photographed from above. The Dean's counter-position is important: overhead photography is among the most demanding, because the entire composition must be resolved in two dimensions. Every element is fully visible. There is no background to blur, no depth to exploit, no shadow falling naturally behind a tall subject. The entire frame is equal, and the entire frame must be composed with equal care.
