Captured in the ancient city of Mardin, Turkey, this photograph masterfully utilizes rear-curtain sync flash to illuminate the historic architecture rising from the Mesopotamian plain. By holding an SB-600 flash unit to the left, the photographer created a dramatic interplay of light and shadow that emphasizes the texture and timeless character of the setting. This image is award-worthy for its technical precision in challenging low-light conditions and its evocative ability to bridge the gap between historical heritage and modern photographic storytelling, resulting in a candid portrait that feels both intimate and grand.
Orhan Aksel was born in 1961. He is an Industrial and Systems engineer, graduated from University of Florida in ’86. Since then he is the founder and owner of a high-tech company in Istanbul. The sun retreats, leaving the stone to hold the heat of the day. It is a slow release. We walk through streets that have seen empires rise and crumble into dust, yet the walls remain, indifferent to our passing.
Read the reflection →There is a peculiar geometry to the way we inhabit a space after the sun has retreated. During the day, we are defined by our movements, by the tasks we set for ourselves and the clarity of the horizon. But when the light fails, the world undergoes a quiet contraction.
