Of the thousands of candid portraits I’ve reviewed, most drown in their own sentimentality. What separates this from the rest is the potter’s posture; he isn’t posing, he’s collapsing. The shallow depth of field from that 85mm lens isolates his exhaustion against the rigid, repetitive geometry of the clay. It’s a brutal, honest look at labor. Honestly, it makes my own back ache. In thirty years, this record of fading craftsmanship will be essential history.
