Holding up the World by Leanne Lindsay

Embark on a journey through the unexpected challenges of capturing a profound moment in this photograph, taken amidst the captivating art installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. The artwork portrays 1000 men supporting a symbolic platform, representing the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Stepping into the scene, I faced the awkwardness of wanting to capture the essence of the tiny figures beneath the platform. Amidst a crowd of onlookers, I decided to embrace the unconventional and get down on the floor. Overcoming embarrassment, I persevered to achieve the shot I envisioned. Timing was crucial, waiting for the right moment when only one person walked the platform, positioning themselves perfectly to cast the ideal reflection.

This experience marked a significant shift in my attitude as a photographer, challenging preconceived notions. Contrary to fears, the world didn’t crumble, and I survived the moment of vulnerability. Join me in exploring the depth and emotion captured in this photograph, a testament to the transformative power of overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of artistic vision.

Born in Adelaide in 1962, Leanne Lindsay’s family moved to Sydney when she was 12 years old. She was gifted her first camera for her 21st birthday but a break-in saw her precious camera stolen just 3 years later. It was only in her late 50s she was able to afford to replace it and now in her 60s she has discovered a passion that was sadly lost many years ago. She now photographs families and newborns but enjoys architectural photography and landscapes in particular.
