The World Beneath Our Feet

I spent an hour this morning trying to find my keys, crawling on my hands and knees across the living room floor. I didn’t find the keys, but I did find a layer of dust I hadn’t noticed and a small, forgotten marble from my childhood. It was a humbling reminder of how much we miss when we are only looking at eye level. We walk through our days with our heads held high, focused on the horizon or the next task on our list, rarely stopping to consider the miniature universes thriving just inches from our shoes. There is a whole rhythm to the ground that we ignore. It is quiet, intricate, and entirely indifferent to our frantic pace. Sometimes, I think we need to be forced to look down—to lose our keys or simply stop moving—to realize that the most complex stories aren’t always the ones happening in front of us. What else are we walking past without ever really seeing?

Joaquín Alonso Arellano Ramírez has captured this hidden perspective in his beautiful image titled Jungle. It reminds me that there is so much life waiting for us if we just take a moment to look closer. Does this view change how you see the ground beneath you today?
