Home Reflections The Quiet Inheritance

The Quiet Inheritance

I spent this morning trying to fix a broken ceramic pot in my kitchen. My hands were shaking a little, and I kept worrying about whether the glue would hold or if the cracks would always show. It felt like such a fragile task. Then, I looked out the window and saw a bird building a nest in the hedge. It was working with bits of dry grass and mud, creating something sturdy out of things that seemed so temporary. It didn’t seem to worry about the wind or the rain that might come later. It just kept working, focused entirely on the future of its little brood. It made me realize how much of our lives we spend trying to protect what we have, rather than trusting in the simple, quiet act of building for what comes next. We are all just passing things along, aren’t we? What are we leaving behind for the ones who will follow us?
