Midnight Snow, by Madoka Hori

Reading in my bed on a very cold night, I noticed something. It was too quiet. Since it only snows once or twice during winter where I live, I might have felt the slight difference in the air. I peeped out through the curtain and snow just started to cover everything. Excited like a kid, I jumped out of bed, grabbed my Dad’s NIKON and stepped outside. Snow on the deciduous tree was glittering because of the nearest streetlamp. This photo captures the silent moment of a snowing night and it tells us winter’s almost over.

Photographer: Madoka Hori (Ashiya, Japan) Guest Photographer
Madoka Hori’s first camera was a toy she got in Singapore when she was on a family trip at age 4. She could press shutter release button, use flash, change filters to see the world differently and it amazed her. She knew it could be fun to hold a (real) camera someday rather than just being the subject of her father’s photography all the time. She started to take photos during high school and after she shifted to digital when she was 20, it got a lot easier for her to capture the moment she wanted to remember. Now she primarily uses Olympus Pen E-P2 and occasionally experiments with her father’s NIKON D800. Travelling and looking at people on the street through a lens is the most exciting thing for her. Feel free to contact her if you have any advice on photography or just want to know about Japan. She’s 27 years old and working for online marketing start-up.
