One of the great misunderstandings of modern camera marketing is the idea that a zoom lens is a tool that saves you from walking. Advertisements praise the ability to sit comfortably in the third row and “bring the subject closer” with the tap of a screen. But an experienced photographer knows that focal length does not bring things closer; it fundamentally changes the geometric and emotional relationship between the subject, the background, and the viewer. When you stand three meters away with a 24mm lens, you are inside the space of the subject. When you stand twenty meters away with a 200mm lens, you are observing them through a telescope.
