Taking Command: Custom Pro Controls and the Reciprocity Law

180.4 Lesson 04 of 08 3 quiz questions 1 assignment

The moment you hand your camera over to an automatic exposure system, you have made a quiet pact with an algorithm. You have agreed to let a microprocessor decide how bright the world should look, how motion should be rendered, and how much depth of field the viewer is permitted to see. The algorithm invariably seeks safety: it will average the scene out to eighteen percent neutral grey, choose a shutter speed fast enough to prevent hand-shake, and pick an aperture that keeps most things acceptably sharp. It produces an acceptable image. But an artist does not leave home in search of an acceptable image; an artist seeks an honest statement.
