For fifteen consecutive years, the Light & Composition Award-Winning Gear Jury upheld an unbending institutional rule: no smartphone, regardless of marketing claims or megapixels, could be classified as a Camera. Every pocket device was relegated to the ‘Mobile’ category because software emulation cannot replace the physical behavior of light.
Today, that boundary has officially dissolved.
Following rigorous bench testing and field evaluations, the Light & Composition Jury has officially awarded the Apple iPhone 18 Pro a composite score of 92.0 / 100, formally graduating the instrument into the permanent Professional Camera (CAMERA) registry alongside medium-format and flagship mirrorless bodies.
Its sibling, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, achieved a score of 93.0 / 100, driven by its expansive 6.9-inch calibrated viewfinder display and enhanced thermal endurance during sustained 48MP ProRAW bursts.

Jury Verdict Citation
“The introduction of a genuine 6-blade mechanical iris operating across four optical stops (ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0) fundamentally restores optical truth to smartphone photography. Combined with uncompressed 48MP ProRAW output and tactile shutter controls, the iPhone 18 Pro transcends computational gimmickry and stands as a legitimate primary instrument for university study and professional documentary work.”
