Fiddling with a manual Vivitar zoom and a flash rig from a bouncing jeep is a recipe for disaster, not art. Most would’ve packed it in when the light failed. Yet, Aksel clearly didn't. He’s wrestled a balanced exposure out of the chaos. I’ve spent enough nights shivering in the bush to know that kind of persistence isn't cheap. It’s a rare, gritty bit of work. One has to respect the sheer stubbornness of it.

The zebra stands. The flash cuts through the savanna, a sharp, artificial intrusion. It’s jarring. I’ve spent minutes staring at the dark, velvet horizon behind the animal. That vast, unlit space is where the truth hides. It’s quiet there. The light doesn't reach the edges of the frame. I find myself wanting to step into that shadow. Nothing here is accidental. The empty corner is not empty. It’s the breath before the night begins.

The flash cuts through the savannah like a scalpel, forcing the zebra into a sudden, violent clarity. It’s an act of intrusion, really. By pinning the animal against the dying light, Aksel denies the darkness its rightful silence. I find it unsettling, this refusal to let the creature fade into the dusk. It’s a cold, calculated imposition of human will upon the wild. I’ve never liked being forced to look at what prefers to hide.
