Pilgrim Girl & Prayer Flags by Ryszard Wierzbicki
This photo shows once again the pilgrim girl I met at the Boudhanath in Kathmandu, this time surrounded by the commonly found prayer flags in the background. You’ll often see multicolored prayer flags fluttering in Nepal on peaks, mountain passes, and near temples and stupas. They come from Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Each color represents an element: blue for sky, white for air, red for fire, green for water, and yellow for earth. The prayers and mantras printed on them are meant to be carried by the wind, bringing peace and good fortune to all beings. For Nepalis, they’re a symbol of faith, harmony with nature, and a spiritual connection to the mountains.
