The Architecture of the Ephemeral

Why do we insist that permanence is the only measure of value? We build monuments of stone and write histories in ink, hoping to defy the inevitable erosion of time. Yet, the most profound truths of our existence are often found in the fleeting—the sudden shift of light, the brief alignment of wings, the breath that exists only for a heartbeat before it is released back into the ether. We are terrified of the temporary, seeing it as a loss, when perhaps it is the only way the universe can keep itself fresh. A thing does not need to last forever to be complete; its beauty is precisely that it is here, and then, with a quiet grace, it is elsewhere. We spend our lives grasping at shadows, forgetting that the shadow is only possible because something vibrant passed by. If we could learn to love the flicker as much as the flame, would we finally stop fearing the dark?
