Portstewart isn't a place for the faint-hearted, and I’ve spent enough freezing mornings there to know that foam doesn't behave for the casual tourist. One suspects Ivanova didn't just stumble upon this. The shutter speed is sharp, yet it captures the violence of the Atlantic with a rare, disciplined eye. It’s a cold, wet, miserable business, but she’s clearly put in the hours. I’d have liked to be there, shivering right beside her.

There’s a cold, lonely violence in these crashing Atlantic curls. I’ve spent my life looking for the soul in a subject’s eyes, but here, the ocean is the subject, and it’s keeping its secrets. It’s technically sharp, sure, but it feels like a wall. I find myself wanting to look past the foam to see who’s standing on that shore. It’s a beautiful, distant thing, but it doesn't let me in.

1/200sec at f/9, ISO 100. It’s a safe, clinical choice. The f/9 aperture keeps the foam’s texture sharp across the frame, but 1/200sec is an odd middle ground. It’s not quite frozen, nor is it a deliberate blur. It’s just indecisive. I’ve spent enough time staring at these waves to know they deserve more commitment. The technical execution is clean, sure, but it lacks the grit I’d expect from the Atlantic. It’s technically sound, yet emotionally hollow.
