The Canal Saint Martin neighbourhood is nestled between the neighborhoods of Gare du Nord and Republic, in northeastern Paris. Along the banks of the canal, tent refugee camps have sprung up.
I hadn’t been there for a long time and the new landscape jumped before my eyes. Over the years, the word “disinterestedness” was frequently used to describe the official attitude in light of that issue , an issue that had been raised by NGOs long ago. Nothing seemed to have changed much.

It all started when Nicolas Sarkozy, who was then the minister of the interior, closed the refugee camp of Sangatte in 2002.
