The Weight of the Passing

We measure our lives by the things we hold onto. A handrail, a ledge, the hem of a coat. We believe that if we grip tightly enough, the world will stop its relentless forward motion. But the world does not stop. It moves with a heavy, iron indifference, indifferent to the fingers that ache or the feet that find no purchase. There is a specific rhythm to survival—a frantic, quiet dance performed on the edge of a blade. We watch from a distance, safe in our stillness, and wonder how it feels to exist in the path of something so much larger than ourselves. Is it courage, or is it simply the only way to be? The tracks stretch out into a horizon that promises nothing but more of the same. We are all clinging to something, waiting for the momentum to carry us to a place where we might finally let go.
