Home Reflections The Weight of Quiet

The Weight of Quiet

I walked past the construction site on my way to the grocery store this morning. There was a heavy machine idling near the gate, its engine vibrating through the soles of my shoes. It looked so tired, if a machine can be tired, just waiting for the next command to move earth or lift steel. It made me think about how much of our world is built on the backs of things that never asked to be part of our plans. We are so good at assigning roles to the living and the non-living alike, expecting them to carry our burdens without complaint. We forget that there is a difference between being useful and being free. Sometimes, I wonder if the things we command to work for us feel the same exhaustion we do when we are forced to stay on a path we didn’t choose. Does the silence that follows a long day of labor feel like a relief, or just another kind of waiting?

Obeyed Labor by Nirupam Roy

Nirupam Roy has captured this heavy stillness in the image titled Obeyed Labor. It serves as a gentle reminder of the lives that move alongside our own, often in service to our needs. What do you see when you look into their eyes?
