The Weight of a Look

I was sitting on the subway this morning, watching a young boy across from me. He was staring at the window, his reflection ghosting over the dark tunnel walls. He didn’t blink for a long time. It made me wonder what he was actually seeing—was he looking at the passing lights, or was he somewhere else entirely, lost in a memory or a daydream? We spend so much of our lives hiding behind polite expressions, keeping our guard up, but there are these rare, quiet moments where the mask slips. In those seconds, the eyes become a doorway. You can see the history of a person, the things they are afraid to say out loud, and the simple, raw truth of just being alive. It is a heavy thing, to truly look at someone, and an even heavier thing to be looked at in return. Do we ever really see each other, or are we just catching glimpses of the stories we tell ourselves?

Through the Eyes of Aidan by Keith Riley
