The Weight of a Hand

We are born into a world that demands we stand alone. We are taught to walk, to speak, to claim our own space. Yet, there is a quiet gravity that pulls us toward another. It is not always spoken. It is the way a hand rests on a shoulder, or the way two people move as if tethered by an invisible thread. We spend our lives learning the boundaries of our own skin, only to find that the most important parts of us exist in the space between ourselves and someone else. We carry the weight of others, and in doing so, we become lighter. It is a strange, silent pact. To watch over, to be watched. To know that if you stumble, there is a presence that has already anticipated your fall. Does the shadow belong to the one who casts it, or to the one who walks beside it?

Soul Mates by Ryszard Wierzbicki

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this silent pact in his photograph titled Soul Mates. It is a reminder that we are rarely as solitary as we believe. Do you recognize the hand that holds you?
