The Unspoken Hello

I remember sitting on a low stone wall in a village outside Luang Prabang, waiting for a rain shower to pass. A young boy, no older than seven, wandered over and stood about three feet away. He didn’t speak, and I didn’t reach for my notebook. We just watched the water turn the red dust into dark, heavy mud. There is a specific kind of curiosity that exists before language takes over—a raw, unfiltered assessment of one stranger by another. It is a moment of pure, unadorned presence. We often think we need to offer something to bridge the gap between us, a gift or a greeting, but sometimes the most honest connection is simply the willingness to be seen. It is the quiet recognition that, despite the miles and the different lives, we are both just standing in the rain, wondering what the other is thinking. What happens when you stop trying to define the people you meet and just let them exist in your space?

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this exact feeling of innocent, unscripted curiosity in his photograph titled Who’s that …? It serves as a beautiful reminder of how a single glance can hold an entire world of wonder. Does this image remind you of a time you were truly seen by a stranger?
