Portrait photography's roots trace back to the 1850s, when the camera became a tool for documentation rather than decoration. Before photographs, only the wealthy could commission painted portraits. Cheaper photographic processes changed this permanently, and with that change came a new possibility: portraits of people who had never before been considered worthy of representation.
