The Words That Name and Describe
Grounded in the Dean’s foundational grammar teaching, this course treats the parts of speech that name and describe as the true building blocks of fluent English. You will study the noun and its many kinds, master plurals, possessives, partitive phrases, and compound nouns, and then learn to stand in for nouns with every family of pronoun the language offers.
From there the focus turns to description: choosing adjectives well, ordering them the way native speakers do, and comparing them with comparative and superlative forms — before finishing with the adverb, the great fine-tuner that tells us how, where, when, how often, and to what extent. A capstone project brings all four categories together in your own descriptive writing.
Expect many concrete example sentences, clear explanations, and short exercises that build real confidence. The goal is not to memorise terminology but to use these words naturally, so that your speaking and writing become clearer, richer, and unmistakably your own.
