Mastering Techniques for Powerful Portraits

8 lessons 0% complete Next: The Power of Subject Positioning

A powerful portrait is built long before the shutter falls — in the decision of where to place a face inside the frame, where the eyes sit, which way the gaze travels, and what the light leaves in shadow. This intermediate course teaches subject positioning as the craft at the heart of portraiture, drawn from the Dean’s Symphony of Faces: Mastering Subject Positioning in Portraiture.

Across four modules — positioning the subject, faces and profiles and gaze, tone and story, and the decisive candid encounter — you will move from taking a likeness to making a portrait that holds a viewer. Working from photographs made on the railway platforms and marketplaces of Bangladesh, you will learn to align eyes to the frame’s strongest points, position full faces and side profiles for balance and impact, use black-and-white to reveal character, and meet strangers with the patience and respect candid portraiture demands. Each lesson pairs a short quiz with a field assignment; the course ends with a portrait series submitted to the Light & Composition Award.
