A Masterclass in Portrait Photography: Echoes of Emotion
A portrait can record a face, or it can hold a feeling. Echoes of Emotion teaches the second – the art of photographing not merely what a person looks like but what they carry within, drawn from the Dean’s Echoes of Emotion: Photography that Breathes with Feeling. This intermediate course treats emotion itself as the true subject of the portrait, revealed through the delicate dance of light and shadow, the subtle gesture, and the quiet moment.
Across four modules — beyond likeness, the language of light and tone, the quiet moment and sense of place, and the decisive encounter — you will move from capturing a likeness to making a portrait that breathes. Working from photographs made in the temples, squares and markets of the Kathmandu Valley, you will learn to read emotion in a weathered face and bearing, shape light and shadow as feeling, work in black-and-white tone for gravitas, wait for the subtle gesture, root a subject in their world, and earn the trust that candid portraiture demands. Each lesson pairs a short quiz with a field assignment; the course ends with an emotional portrait series submitted to the Light & Composition Award.
