Technically, it’s a standard macro study, but I find myself wishing Bruening had abandoned the safety of f/6.3. Why resolve the petals so clinically? It’s a missed opportunity to dissolve the form into pure luminescence. I’d have preferred a radical motion blur, pushing this closer to Sugimoto’s ethereal light studies than this conventional botanical portrait. It’s pretty, sure, but it’s far too polite. When will we stop fearing the loss of detail?

It doesn't hold the weight required for true rigor. The composition demands more discipline; it’s far too indulgent for my taste, despite the technical precision of the light.

I’ve spent my life looking for the soul in a frame, and honestly, this just doesn't have a life in it.
