A zoo enclosure is hardly the Serengeti, is it? One suspects the shutter clicked during a pleasant afternoon stroll, rather than after a week of shivering in the tall grass. It’s technically sharp, certainly, but it lacks the grit of a hard-won encounter. I’ve spent enough hours waiting for a creature to acknowledge my existence to know when the photographer hasn’t paid the full fare. It’s a pretty portrait, but it didn’t cost her enough.

Cologne Zoo isn't the savanna, yet we’re asked to admire this giraffe as if it’s wild. Why do we insist on framing captivity as majesty? The sharp focus on those eyelashes feels like a distraction from the enclosure’s invisible bars. It makes me feel a bit sick, honestly. Does the animal’s gentle demeanor belong to it, or is it just a performance for our cameras? Who are we really looking at when the fence disappears?
