Photographing Algeria

Algeria is Africa's largest nation by area, stretching from the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea across the rugged Atlas Mountains into the heart of the Sahara Desert. In Algiers, the historic Casbah cascades down coastal slopes in white-washed ottoman alleys and arched courtyards where dramatic chiaroscuro lighting conditions prevail. Further south, the sandstone plateaus of Tassili n'Ajjer and the dune seas of the Grand Erg Occidental offer infinite desert geometry, where shifting wind and low-angle sun sculpt sand into rippling works of abstract natural art.
