The Distance We Run
We are taught from childhood that speed is synonymous with survival. In the modern city, we sprint between obligations, clutching our schedules like fragile shields, convinced that if we only move quickly enough, nothing difficult can catch us. But what is it that we are genuinely outrunning? The blur of neon light, the heavy rush of footsteps against the pavement, the silhouettes passing like ghosts in the evening fog—they reveal how easily movement is mistaken for progress. To outrun the world is an exhausting illusion, for wherever we finally halt to catch our breath, our own thoughts are waiting quietly to receive us.

This photograph by Javed Miandad, ‘Escape’, captures that breathless momentum with uncanny truth. In the blur of running figures, we see our collective haste laid bare. What are we trying to outrun when the world demands so much of us?
