The Unposed Portrait: Light, Timing, and the Decisive Expression

Catch the moment the guard drops.

The working craft of unposed portraiture — focus, natural light, timing, and choosing the frame that holds true presence.

Course Overview

Once you can see a person honestly, you need the craft to catch them. This foundation course teaches the working technique of unposed portraiture: how to grab a fleeting shot, pre-focus so you never miss it, read body language, use conversation and timing to catch the decisive expression, work only in natural available light, and — just as importantly — how to select the one frame that carries true presence after the shutter has closed.

This is the second half of a two-part foundation in portraiture. Its companion course, Mastering the Art of Portrait Photography (PHJ 150), covers the human foundation — presence, trust, and ethics. Here we turn to the hands: focus, light, timing, and the quiet discipline of choosing.
