The Threshold of Elsewhere

Why do we feel the need to mark the boundary between the known and the unknown? We build gates, hang signs, and carve paths into the sand, as if naming a place could somehow anchor our fleeting presence within it. Yet, the tide does not care for our labels. It rises and falls with a rhythm that predates our desire to belong, washing away the footprints we leave behind as proof of our arrival. We are constantly crossing thresholds, moving from the heat of the day into the cooling shadows of the evening, searching for a sanctuary that feels like a destination. But perhaps the sanctuary is not the structure itself, nor the sign that beckons us forward. Perhaps it is simply the act of standing still while the world shifts around us, acknowledging that we are merely guests in a landscape that is forever in the process of becoming something else. If we removed the markers, would we still know how to find our way home?

Welcome by Ryszard Wierzbicki

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this quiet transition in his photograph titled Welcome. It invites us to pause at the edge of the water and consider what we are truly seeking when we step into a new space. Does this scene feel like a beginning or an end to you?
