The Currency of a Smile
I was sitting at a roadside stall in a small town outside of Pune, nursing a cup of milky, spiced tea that was far too hot to drink. A young girl, no older than seven, was playing with a discarded plastic bottle near the dust of the road. She didn’t have much, but when she looked up and caught my eye, she didn’t look away. Instead, she offered a grin so wide and unburdened that it felt like a sudden shift in the air. It was a reminder that joy doesn’t require a reason or a stage; it is a reflex, a way of saying that despite the heat, the dust, and the noise of the world, we are here, and we are together for this one heartbeat. We spend so much of our lives guarding our expressions, waiting for the right moment to be happy, while others carry that light as easily as breathing. What is it that makes us stop guarding our own joy?

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this exact, fleeting magic in his image titled Pune Street Smile. It is a beautiful reminder of how a simple connection can bridge any distance. Does this smile remind you of a moment when you felt truly seen?
