The Sweetness of Patience

I spent this morning trying to bake a simple loaf of bread, but I rushed the process. I didn’t wait for the dough to rise properly, and I kept checking the oven door every few minutes, convinced that if I watched it closely enough, it would happen faster. It didn’t, of course. It came out dense and uneven, a reminder that some things simply refuse to be hurried. We live in a world that demands instant results, where we want the reward before we have even finished the work. But there is a quiet, stubborn dignity in the waiting. Whether it is the slow rise of yeast or the careful arrangement of a meal, the time we invest is what gives the final result its soul. We often think the goal is the finish line, but perhaps the goal is actually the slow, deliberate act of tending to something until it is ready to be shared. When was the last time you let something take exactly as long as it needed?
