The Currency of Joy

I was standing in the grocery store line this morning, feeling particularly grumpy about the long wait and the rain outside. The woman in front of me was struggling with a mountain of bags, and I was just about to sigh out loud when her toddler turned around. He didn’t know I was having a bad day. He didn’t know about the rain or the errands I still had to run. He just looked at me and gave me the biggest, most genuine grin I have seen in months. It was so sudden and so bright that my own frustration just evaporated. It is strange how we think we need grand gestures or perfect circumstances to feel okay, but sometimes, all it takes is a single expression to remind us that joy doesn’t require a reason. It just exists, waiting for us to notice it. Why do we make it so hard for ourselves to find that kind of lightness in the middle of a heavy day?
