The Language of Hands

I was standing in the grocery store line this morning, feeling impatient and tired, when the woman in front of me dropped her change. It scattered everywhere. Before I could even sigh, a young boy nearby knelt down, gathered every coin, and pressed them back into her palm with a wide, toothy grin. She didn’t say a word, but she touched his shoulder, and for a second, the whole line felt different. We often think that kindness requires a grand gesture or a perfectly crafted speech. We wait for the right moment to say something meaningful, but usually, the words get stuck or feel too heavy. I think we forget that our bodies are already speaking for us. A simple shape made with fingers, a hand on a shoulder, or a steady gaze can carry more weight than a long letter ever could. It is a quiet language, one that doesn’t need to be translated to be understood by anyone watching.

Heart shaped Blessing by Ryszard Wierzbicki

Ryszard Wierzbicki has captured this exact kind of silent language in his beautiful image titled Heart shaped Blessing. It reminds me that we are all capable of saying so much without saying anything at all. What is the last gesture that made you feel truly seen?
