Home Reflections The Weight of the Horizon

The Weight of the Horizon

I spent this morning trying to clear out my junk drawer. It is one of those tasks I put off for months, convinced that if I just ignore the clutter, it might organize itself. As I pulled out tangled cords and dried-up pens, I found a postcard from a trip I took years ago. I don’t remember the specific day, but I remember the feeling of standing by the water, looking out at a line where the blue of the sky finally gave up and met the blue of the sea. It is a strange thing, how we spend so much of our lives looking for a finish line, a place where we can finally stop and breathe. We think we need to reach the edge of something to feel settled. But maybe the horizon isn’t a destination at all. Maybe it is just a reminder that there is always more space than we can hold, and that is enough.

Paradise Peak by Sandra Frimpong

Sandra Frimpong has captured this feeling perfectly in her image titled Paradise Peak. It reminds me of that same quiet, expansive peace I found on that old postcard. Does looking at this view make you feel like you are arriving somewhere, or just letting go?
