Home Reflections The Vessels of Waiting

The Vessels of Waiting

Why do we feel the need to anchor ourselves to the earth when the tide is constantly pulling us toward the unknown? We build structures of wood and rope, naming them after our intentions, hoping they will hold firm against the rhythm of the sea. Yet, every boat is merely a promise of departure, a temporary defiance of the current. We spend our lives preparing for the journey, checking the knots and watching the horizon, as if the act of waiting were the same as being ready. Perhaps we are all just vessels moored in the shallows, waiting for a wind that may never arrive, or perhaps we are already drifting and simply refuse to look at the water beneath our feet. If we were to untie the ropes, would we find ourselves lost, or would we finally discover where we were meant to go all along?

Balinese Boats by Ryszard Wierzbicki

Ryszard Wierzbicki has taken this beautiful image titled Balinese Boats. It captures that quiet tension between the stillness of the shore and the vast, restless potential of the sea. Does it make you feel like staying, or like setting sail?
