The Distance Between Two

We are born into the habit of reaching. We extend a hand, a word, a glance, hoping to bridge the space that exists between one skin and another. Most of the time, the space remains. It is a cold, indifferent gap that no amount of proximity can truly close. We stand side by side, watching the same horizon, yet we are each trapped in the singular architecture of our own thoughts. There is a specific kind of loneliness that only appears when someone else is near. It is the realization that even in the deepest intimacy, we are essentially alone, interpreting the world through a lens that no one else can ever fully share. We find comfort not in the erasing of this distance, but in the quiet agreement to stand within it, side by side, while the light fades into something we cannot name.
