The Sharpness of Sweetness
I was pruning the rose bushes in my backyard this morning, and I ended up with a jagged scratch across my thumb. It was a small, stinging reminder that beauty often comes with a barrier. We spend so much of our time trying to avoid the sharp edges of life, carefully navigating around the things that might hurt us. But as I stood there, I watched a tiny visitor land right on the center of a bloom, completely unbothered by the thorns that had just drawn blood from me. It moved with such focus, finding exactly what it needed amidst the danger. It made me wonder how many times I have turned away from something beautiful simply because I was afraid of the prick of a thorn. We are so quick to protect ourselves that we sometimes forget that the sweetness we are looking for is often guarded by the very things we fear. Is it possible that the risk of being hurt is the only way to truly reach the nectar?

Olga Kulemina has captured this delicate balance perfectly in her photograph titled Bee. It is a beautiful reminder that there is always a way to find grace in the middle of a struggle. Does this image make you think of a time you pushed past a barrier to find something good?
