The Geography of Breath

There is a weight to the air in places where the earth tilts sharply toward the sky. We build our lives in layers, one stone upon another, hoping the foundation holds against the gravity of circumstance. It is easy to mistake the surface for the whole. We look at the steep paths and the narrow gaps between walls and we see only the struggle of the climb. But there is a rhythm here that ignores the map. It is found in the sudden, sharp intake of breath before a laugh, or the way a hand finds a grip on a rusted rail. These are not signs of endurance. They are signs of life claiming its own space, indifferent to the view from below. We are all just trying to find a place where our feet can rest, even if the ground beneath us is perpetually shifting. What remains when the noise of the world finally settles into the stone?
