The Weight of the Descent
I spent this morning trying to organize my bookshelf, pulling out volumes I haven’t touched in years. It is funny how we build these little structures in our lives—the way we stack our memories, our habits, and our responsibilities like stones in a wall. I found myself lingering on a book I bought during a trip I barely remember, and for a moment, I felt the physical weight of all the paths I haven’t taken. We spend so much of our energy climbing toward something, always looking for the next level, the next step, the next achievement. But there is something profound in the descent, in the quiet act of moving downward into the cool, shadowed spaces we usually overlook. It is in those lower depths, away from the glare of the sun, that we often find the most stillness. We are so busy building our own monuments that we forget to inhabit the spaces already carved out for us. Do you ever feel like you are just waiting for the right moment to step down and finally breathe?

Shirren Lim has captured this feeling perfectly in her image titled Steps. It reminds me that even in the most structured places, there is a rhythm to how we move through our days. Does this image make you want to climb higher, or are you drawn to the shadows below?
