Home Reflections The Pulse of the City

The Pulse of the City

I stood on the corner of 5th Street this evening, waiting for the bus that was already ten minutes late. The rain had just stopped, leaving the asphalt slick and dark. As the cars rushed past, their headlights smeared into long, glowing streaks against the wet pavement. It felt like the city was breathing in rhythm, a constant, restless pulse that never really sleeps. I often think about how we move through these spaces, always in such a hurry to get from one point to another, rarely stopping to notice the way the light dances off the surfaces we walk on. We are just tiny, fleeting sparks in a much larger, glowing machine. It is easy to feel small when you are surrounded by so much concrete and history, but there is a strange comfort in knowing that the world keeps moving, steady and bright, even when we are standing still. Do you ever feel like you are just a ghost passing through the architecture of your own life?

Siew Bee Lim has captured this exact feeling in the beautiful image titled A Front View of Fullerton Building. It perfectly mirrors that sense of kinetic energy flowing past something solid and timeless. Does the city feel like a living thing to you, too?
